BUILD SKYSCRAPERS ALONG STRAND

Swansea council wants our views on a tall buildings strategy for the city. As you know, I'm not keen on too much public consultation. But getting this right is important.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think the 29-storey, 350-ft tower being built in the marina is a big mistake. Surely it creates a precedent for future high-rise buildings on the shoreline?

I am all in favour of developing Swansea Bay, but not by turning it into Manhattan.

So the city must decide if it wants more skyscrapers, and if so, where they should go.

I have yet to hear of a better idea than the one put forward by Swansea Civic Society last year to concentrate tall buildings along The Strand. It would create a new and much-needed business district in the city centre, give a distinctive identity to that part of the river corridor, and leave our shoreline for better uses.
